Quick summary

Tax documents such as Form 16, Form 16A and annual tax statements help support the figures reported in an income tax return. Form 16 is not the only document needed for filing. CareAll can help you understand your documents, compare them with each other and identify inconsistencies before your return is prepared.

What are Form 16 and other tax documents?

Form 16 is the name commonly used for the certificate an employer issues to an employee, showing salary paid and tax deducted at source. Form 16A is commonly used for TDS certificates on certain non-salary payments, such as interest or professional fees.

Other documents also support a return, such as annual tax statements available on the official portal, bank and interest certificates, capital gains statements and records supporting deductions. Following the Income-tax Act, 2025 and the Income-tax Rules, 2026, form names and numbers may have changed, so current names should be checked on the official portal.

Tax certificate

A document issued by a deductor showing the amount paid or credited and the tax deducted at source.

  • Form 16 generally covers salary income and TDS from one employer.
  • Other income, deductions and tax credits may need other documents.
  • Documents should be consistent with each other and with portal statements.

Who may need it?

Document review may be useful whenever you are unsure what your tax documents show. People who commonly explore it include:

  • Salaried employees

Employees who want to understand their Form 16 and how it relates to their return.

  • Employees who changed jobs

Employees with certificates from more than one employer during the year.

  • Taxpayers with non-salary TDS

Taxpayers who received TDS certificates on interest, rent, fees or other payments.

  • Taxpayers who noticed a mismatch

Taxpayers whose certificates do not seem to match the statements on the official portal.

These examples are not rules. The documents relevant to you depend on your income sources and current requirements, which should be verified against official sources.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Form 16 as the only document

Other income, deductions and tax credits may need other documents. Form 16 is not the only document needed for filing.

  • Ignoring differences with portal statements

TDS in certificates should match the tax credits shown on the official portal.

  • Forgetting a previous employer

If you changed jobs, certificates from each employer may be relevant.

  • Incorrect PAN on certificates

A wrong PAN in the deductor's records can affect whether the credit is reflected against you.
